Website Hosting · Green Bay, Wisconsin
Most comparison articles recycle the same talking points from years ago. After running all three platforms in our own facility for decades, the questions we ask are different.
Shared hosting works for many brochure sites. The problem appears when a neighbor runs a heavy backup or compromised script. Cloud/VPS gives guaranteed resources. Dedicated removes neighbors entirely.
Shared is fully managed. Cloud and dedicated are not automatically managed unless you buy a managed service. Many people move for “control” and inherit more operational work.
The cleanest path for most businesses is Shared → Managed VPS → Dedicated or Colocation. Jumping straight from shared to colocation is rare. Moving backward is painful.
On shared you open a ticket. On dedicated or colocation you often need someone who can log in or walk into the building. If your team is small, “managed” matters more than the platform name.
| Situation | Usually the better fit |
|---|---|
| Simple brochure site, under 50k visits/month | Shared |
| Growing WordPress or application with plugins or e-commerce | Managed VPS / cloud |
| High traffic, custom software, or compliance needs | Dedicated or colocation |
| Need specific hardware, GPU, or high power density | Colocation or bare metal |
| Small team that does not want to manage servers | Shared or fully managed VPS |
Choose the platform that matches your current traffic, your team’s ability to manage servers, and how much isolation you actually need. Most businesses stay on shared longer than they should, then jump to cloud too late. A managed VPS is the right middle step for the majority of sites we move.
We can look at real resource usage rather than marketing claims.
